It was rumoured that the Children of the Emperor would have been the key to the Emperor's seat of power. Here is a good example of the Jedi Knight class quest for one of your companions is part of your own storyline, Kira Carsen, at a certain level you would discover that there will a point of time throughout the storyline you would get to learn a companions past. In a sense this is a roundabout way of getting to know more about each other and of course you would either win or lose their loyalty towards you. Either way you would be left with the most interesting storyline that there is.

They were brought onto a spaceport station where the Jedi Knight investigated the usual defection to which Kira's destiny was revealed...
